Black corundum is a kind of gray-black crystal with Al2O3 and iron spinel as the main mineral phase, which is made by high bauxite plus high iron bauxite or iron oxide chips, melting and smelting at high temperature in electric arc furnace and then cooling. Its main chemical composition is aluminum oxide (Al2O3), iron oxide (Fe2O3), and some silicon dioxide (SiO2), titanium dioxide (TiO2) and other components.
Black corundum has the advantages of moderate hardness, good self-sharpness, low grinding heat generated during grinding and polishing, and is not easy to burn the workpiece surface. The production cost of black corundum is lower than that of brown corundum, white corundum, and lower than that of calcined brown corundum, silicon carbide and other commonly used abrasives.
Black corundum is mainly used in various stainless steel, ordinary steel, bamboo, glass and other workpieces, especially the grinding and polishing of stainless steel workpieces. In recent decades, the application of black corundum has been extended to the fields of laying wear-resistant anti-slip road surface, making resin abrasives, making coated abrasives and so on.
